How
to Plan an 80s Night
Below are some
retro party ideas and tips
I have used when setting up themed parties and a few
I have borrowed from other party sites.
Hiring the right DJ for a 70's and or 80s retro night is the big ingredient if you're planning a larger scale wedding or company party event. If he can't mix the right tunes the party is DOA.
Well, there is the obvious first tip which includes asking guests to come dressed in their 80's themed attire. Offering a best dressed couple prize is often a "cool" incentive. If you're the bride or groom or guest of honor you could choose to accessorize if you don't want to go all out for the ceremony and consider a change right after.
Any guests that have cars from the eighties should park them at the entrance of the facility where your having the party and at the church. Consider these props to further enhance the theme.
The easiest least expensive giveaway would be sunglasses - cheap sunglasses.
Setting up an atari game or 2 is always fun. You can buy inexpensive controllers and plug them into old tv sets. Guests will certainly enjoy this opportunity to go back a few decades.
80s buttons, think Michael Jackson, Wham, Frankie Goes to Hollywood etc..
Accessorize - dark jeans, jelly bracelets, neon bangle bracelets, neon earrings, bell bottoms, legwarmers (make them by cutting the sleeves off of an old, ugly sweater). Clothing and jewelry can be found in friends' attics and secondhand stores. What aabout 70's or 80's style food? Doritos come to mind - leave the bag out.
Have a game show to take it over the edge with seventies and eighties style trivia. We actually supply a complete game show set. More info is at gameshowguy.com. Including a name that tune and jeopardy style theme.
If you've got the right group consider a lip sync or karaoke competition. Limit it so the wedding or party doesn;t get taken over by karaoke. Maybe you can make it a lottery style drawing. Possibly facing off groups in a battle of the bands; B-52's versus the Beastie Boys.
During Cocktail hour give people something to talk about by playing 70's and eighties themed television tracks.
For those that graduated in the seventies and 80's ask them to bring a highschool picture or better yet scan and email it to you. Then have it on their table or near their name place cards.
Cardboard stand up people can be a hoot too. People will go nuts taking pictures with their favorite pop star of their decade.
Maybe giving
people a burned copy of music as a party favor would be a neat idea. Be sure
to get the RIAA's approval and pay those royalties. After all George Michael
and Boy George could use the money. The covers could have pictures from 70's
and eighties tv shows on them or of course pop stars.
You could have fold out covers on the cd's and have pens around so people
could sign the covers like year books.
If you're hiring us to dj the event we'll be sure to bring the disco ball. We do charge a set up fee because that disco ball will require us coming earlier and if you're going to have a light up dance floor it too will add many hours to doing this right.
Movie Posters from the seventies and eighties will be a huge addition to making this the right theme. Ask around - shoot out an email to your guests. Help them help you!
I had one guest discuss setting up a basket with a note - "Capri Sun 151" and using a hypodermic needle injecting each "drink bag" with some Bacardi 151.
Rubik's Cube Contest - need i say more?
Breakdancing Contest - need I say more?
Props - Think posters, garbage pail kids, tron, wwf figures, star wars, record album covers, cool t-shirts, farrah fawcett posters, video games - both odyssey and atari, commodore 64, handheld video games mattel and coleco, lazer tag,
A dessert table with candy from these eras - pop rocks, dip'n sticks, big league chew, mentos, necco wafers.
Remember Plinko from the Price is Right? We can rent you a Plinko Game, we've renamed drinko. The losers have to do a shot or have a drink.
Download photos of the 70's and 80's and use them to make each table at your retro event a sub theme. The Smiths are at the disco inferno table, the nichols are at the Boogie Fever Table and the Jones are at the Have a Nice Day Table (smiley face).
One idea I thought was kind of cool was at the entrance have a "time tunnel" and have someone "man it". Maybe a local thespian... Anyway, when guests enter the tunnel tell them they are going back to the age of disco balls, bell bottoms and orange hair (or something like that).
When mailing out invitations be sure to instruct your guests on what to do. Give them ideas, point them to this link - get them involved.
COnsider having us as your dj's do a top 10 countdown during cocktail. It's better to have us do it then than later because once the dancing starts it's better we choose what comes next on the list than a top 10 style.
Consider bringing in a big screen TV or having us use our overhead projector to display movies and tv shows from the 70's and 80's.
In the bathrooms for the girls have crimpers and aqua net hair spray.
I like this one a lot and it causes people to interact. Print up tags of 80's famous people, actors, singers, bands, tv shows, etc...and give one to each guest. they then have to guess who they have on their back by asking yes/no questions to other people. great way to get people who don't know each other to mingle!!
If it's a wedding and people want to have you kiss tell them they must sing a song from the 70s or 80s at least once all the way through in order to have you kiss.
Having a visit from pacman or teenage ninja turtles or anything like that is another idea to try out.
The 70's and 80s were not only rock n roll. Hip hop became really popular in the 80s. The guys could dress up in the Adidas jumpsuits and big gold chains and sunglasses. Girls can wear baggy overalls, big buckle belt and gold jewelry. Possibly ewncourage some friends to come dressed as a rock group or rap group.
Have a huge costume box with tons of embarrassing 70s and eighties clothes to wear. So when one of your guests shows up without retro clothes on, you can beg them to wear something from the box.
